After months
of rumors and speculation it's official, Scion is getting a pickup!
Scion spokeswoman
April Fursten told PickupTruck.com that Toyota's youth brand will get
a version of the full size Tundra to help pump some energy into the flagging
Scion lineup.
"The full
size truck segment is facing strong sales headwinds this year and we
have extra capacity to build pickups. In order to sell 200,000 Tundras
this year we need to think outside the box. Scion is the perfect solution
and a perfect match to achieve this goal. Scion buyers have been asking
for a full size pickup," said Ms. Fursten.
While the
name hasn't been selected yet, special features that will be unique
to Scion have been. The future half-ton will come with a standard
1.8-liter DOHC four cylinder engine and the first 500 owners will receive
trucks painted with special tribal tattoo artwork based on Maori or
Celtic designs. Scion has even "inked" a deal to soft market its new
pickup at tattoo parlors around the country, like Toyota did with the
Tundra and Bass Pro Shops when it launched the latest version of that
truck in 2007.
The new
truck is expected to go on sale by April 1, 2009. Pricing hasn't been
set.
