The highly
anticipated all new 2009 Dodge Ram can't arrive soon enough.
With Dodge
Ram sales off by 2% in 2007, from 2006 volumes, Cerberus Chrysler
has decided to temporarily halt production of its full size pickups
for the entire month of January 2008 at its two U.S. plants, in
Fenton, MO and Warren, MI.
Dodge Ram
1500 and 2500 Standard and Quad Cab pickups are built at the St. Louis
North Assembly Plant in Fenton. Dodge Ram 1500 Standard and Quad
Cab pickups plus the Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider midsize pickups
are built at the Warren Truck Assembly plant in Warren.
It's not
clear if Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider production will also be
halted, but that seems likely with the move placing Warren temporarily
offline. The Dodge Dakota was recently freshened for the 2008 model
year with new sheetmetal and an upgraded 4.7-liter V8. Dakota sales
are off 33% in 2007 from 2006.
Chrysler
will also idle its Saltillo Truck Assembly factory in Coahuila, Mexico
for the first two weeks of the new year. Saltillo is the production
site for the heavy duty Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, Dodge Ram
3500, 4500, and 5500 Chassis Cabs, and Sterling Bullet Class 4/5
Chassis Cab.
Sterling,
a subsidiary of Freightliner, announced in early November that since
the popular Bullet Chassis has begun arriving at showrooms, all of
its 2007 production has sold
out.
General
Motors is also expected to temporarily halt production of its Chevrolet
Silverado and GMC Sierra for the first two weeks in January at its
U.S. and Canadian plants.
