The production bound Dodge Ram SRT-10 takes full-size pickup truck power,
performance and looks to a whole new level and provides a glimpse into
the engineering potential of Chrysler's new Performance Vehicle Operations
(PVO) team.
Under its
massive grille and hood scoop the SRT-10 is equipped with the next generation
Viper engine, a 500hp / 500ft-lb 8.3-liter V10. The V10's power outguns
the current full-size pickup performance champ, the SVT
F-150 Ford Lightning's 380-hp / 450ft-lb. 5.4-liter V8.
The SRT-10
also takes its disc brakes and six-speed manual transmission from the
Viper. A modified differential and driveshaft transfer all this power
to massive 24-inch wheels and the suspension has been lowered 1-inch along
with modifications to the power steering to help with control and handling.
The
Dodge Ram SRT-10's Viper V10 engine puts out 500hp and 500ft-lb. of
torque.
With figures
of 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds, 0 to 100 to 0 mph in 18 seconds and a top-speed
of 150 mph, Dodge claims the SRT-10 will be the fastest pickup truck in
production when it reaches showrooms.
Only a rear
wheel drive configuration will be available for the SRT-10. When asked
why not all-wheel drive, Rick Deneau, a Senior Manager for DaimlerChrysler
Communications, told PUTC that the emphasis with rear wheel drive is on,
"on-road performance and handling as offered by traditional sport
trucks." "Rear wheel drive also minimizes weight."
The SRT-10's
exterior was skinned with a striking black metallic flake paint job. While
the metallic feature might not make it, black will definitely be a production
color plus red and an unknown third color.
The
interior emphasizes performance and the SRT-10's Viper heritage.
The exterior
also adds a new front fascia, hood, billet grille and ground effects unique
to the SRT-10 in the Ram truck lineup.
Inside the
SRT-10 adds leather seats and an instrument panel featuring the same graphics
and font from the Viper. Carbon fiber accents, machine drilled pedals
and door locks add to the truck's aura of performance.
Denau expects
that the SRT-10 will be released by the end of 2003, possibly as a 2004
model truck. While pricing has not been announced Deneau added it will
be competitive with the Lightning. And, unlike the Lightning's 5500 unit
limit, there will be no ceiling to the number of SRT-10's produced each
year.
